sophomores

  • Get your core GPA as high as you can
  • Take the SAT/ACT test in June or December
  • Make sure Coach gets your updated score(s)
  • Take all available SAT/ACT prep courses
  • Make sure Coach Bowling has your correct address, email, and phone number
  • Work hard and be a leader for the team
  • Go to as many free workout camps as you can
  • Make a list of schools you are interested in
  • Visit each school's website to make sure they are a good fit for you academically, socially, and athletically
  • Find out when each school is having its summer camp and make arrangements to attend as many as possible
  • Talk to your coaches anytime you have questions or need guidance
  • Work with your coaches to get your Player Profile page established on the website and ensure it has all pertinent info updated
  • Create highlights in Hudl and ensure your Hudl player page is up to date

juniors

  • Take the SAT/ACT test at least once and preferably twice in Summer-Fall
  • Make sure Coach gets your updated score(s)
  • Pass the STAAR test
  • Make sure Coach Bowling has your correct address, email, and phone number
  • Have a great offseason and spring/summer
  • Work hard and be a leader for the team
  • Be prepared to handle all the attention that comes with being recruited
  • Think about how far away from home you are willing to go
  • Make a list of "dream schools" (2-3)
  • Make a list of 4-5 Division II schools you would be interested in
  • Make a list of 4-5 Division III and NAIA schools you would be interested in
  • Make sure those schools are interested in you. If they have not contacted you, reach out to them via email or phone.
  • Find out when each of the smaller schools is having their Junior Day or plan an unofficial visit.
  • Find out when each school from your lists is having their summer camp.
  • Make arrangements to go to the 1-day camp of one of your dream schools.
  • Make sure to go to 2-3 of the camps for your D2 and D3 schools
  • Go to as many free workout camps as possible
  • Nike and Next Level Athlete are good ones
  • Create an academic "resume" and email it to Coach Bowling highlighting any academic honors and awards you've received
  • Include any community service you've done
  • Talk to your coaches any time you have questions
  • Let us know if you need video sent to a school

college visit checklists

athletes

  • Be on your best behavior – they are evaluating you too!
  • Dress to impress
  • Address coaches, professors, etc. as "sir" or "ma'am" when speaking to them
  • If possible, try and visit the college of your intended major and talk to professors
  • Look them in the eye and be truthful
  • Stay away from situations that have the potential to bring trouble
  • Take a tour of the campus, education buildings, student services buildings dorms, etc.
  • Eat in the cafeteria where the football players eat
  • Talk to other athletes in the program other then your guide(s)
  • Ask your guide the good and bad of the football program and university

parents (questions to ask)

  • What are his chances of getting a scholarship here?
  • What is the graduation rate for the football team?
  • How does this compare to the rest of the student body?
  • Are tutors provided to the student/athlete?
  • Who provides the tutors?
  • Is there a study center provided for the student/athlete?
  • How many class hours will the student/athlete take per semester?
  • What type of courses can I expect my son to take his first year?
  • What are the grade requirements for eligibility?
  • Are counselors provided if they are having a hard time adjusting to college life?
  • Will my son’s coach have an “Open Door Policy” for any kind of visit my son needs?
  • Will I as a parent be able to call his position coach and talk to him if needed?
  • Where are the dorms in relation to the athletic facility?
  • Are the dorms for athletes only
  • Will my son be put on any kind of diet or eating program?
  • Will my son be “Redshirted” his first year?
  • What are his chances of playing his first year?
  • What position will he play?
  • If he is “Redshirted” what will his role be with the team?
